Topics include:

A. Powers to Arrest 4 hours

Objective: To familiarize and instruct the individual on the training topics delineated at Business and Professions Code section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements relating to the arrest of an individual. The training will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Power to Arrest Training Manual and may include lecture, discussion, exercises and role-playing.

  1. Overview of Power to Arrest Manual and subject matter.
  2. Definition of arrest and discussion on the implications to the subject, the guard and the company.
  3. Lecture/discussion on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the use of force.
  4. Lecture/discussion in the use of restraint techniques and their implications.
  5. Discussion of trespass laws and implications of enforcement.
  6. Completion of the Power to Arrest Training Manual Test with 100% score in accordance with the Manual's Administering Instructions.

B. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) & Terrorism Awareness 4 hours

Objective: To familiarize and instruct the individual on the subject matter and observation skills required to identify and report precursor activities to a terrorist event, react appropriately, report the occurrence of a terrorist event, and remain safe while helping control the scene after a terrorist event. The training will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Weapons of Mass Destruction & Terrorism Awareness for Security Professionals course consisting of a Digital Video Disk (DVD), Student Workbook and Facilitator Manual.

  2. The Role of a Security Officer.
  3. The Nature of Terrorism.
  4. Weapons of Mass Destruction.
  5. Coordinating and Sharing of Critical Information.

 

16 Hour BSIS - Security Guard - Required Within 30 Days

BSIS requires you to complete 32 hours of continuing education: 16 hours of training within 30 days from the date the registration card is issued 

 

16 Hour BSIS - Security Guard - Required Within 6 Months

BSIS requires you to complete 32 hours of continuing education: 16 hours of training within 30 days from the date the registration card is issued and another 16 hours of training within 6 months from the date the registration card is issued.

 

8 Hour BSIS - Security Guard Annual

Eight (8) hours of continuing training must be completed annually (BPC 7583.6 and CCR 643).

This course meets the BSIS continuing education requirement of an additional 8 hours annually pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section 7583.6(f) (1). At the end of the course the student is provided with a Certificate of Completion in compliance with the appearance requirements stated in Title 16, California Code of Regulations, section 643 (b).

BPC Section 7583.35 requires all licensees or registrants wishing to carry tear gas while on duty to complete a training course pursuant to Penal Code Section 22835. 

This is the stand alone course for adding the qualification to carry tear gas/pepper spray. Enroll in this course only if you already hold a BSIS Guard Card and wish to add Tear Gas/Pepper Spray qualification. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be issued a Certificate of Training and Identification for carrying Tear Gas and Pepper Spray.

This course covers the legal and moral aspects of using pepper spray and mace as well as effective techniques, user awareness, and the responsibilities a security officer must know when carrying and using pepper spray.

NOTE: As of July 1, 2018, you will be required complete an assessment to demonstrate that you are capable, at the time the assessment is completed, of demonstrating appropriate judgment, restraint and self-control for the purposes of carrying and using a firearm when performing security guard duties. (Business and Professions Code Section 7583.23 and 7583.47).

The assessment fee of $60.00 is payable to PSI Services LLC (PSI).

2 day course: 14-hours (12 hours classroom, 2 hours range, minimum)

This course covers the carrying and use of firearms, and is given by a Bureau-certified firearms training instructor at a Bureau certified training facility. The firearm training course is designed to teach students basic technical aspects and legal responsibilities inherent in carrying and using a firearm. Knowing how and when to use a firearm are equally important. Knowing how to use the firearm may save your life. Knowing when to use the firearm may keep you from being criminally prosecuted and going to jail.

Course Outline:

I. Registration (1 hour total)

.5 hour - A. Administration
.5 hour - B. Laws and Regulations for issuing a firearms permit

II. Moral and Legal Aspects (6 hours total)

.5 hour - A. Laws regarding possession and carrying of firearms
 2 hours - B. Laws and standards regarding use of deadly force
 2 hours - C. Avoidance of deadly force - The de-escalation of force
 1 hour - D. Shooting incidents
.5 hour - E. Effects of firearms use

III. Firearms Nomenclature, Maintenance (2 hours total)

1 hour - A. The revolver and semi-automatic, ammunition, parts, and nomenclature
1 hour - B. Firearms safety, general

IV. Weapon Handling and Shooting Fundamentals    1 hour

V. Examination    1 hour

VI. Range Preparation    1 hour

Baton

The baton training course is designed to provide students with the minimum level of proficiency to carry and use a baton while on duty as private security guards. Individuals required to obtain a baton permit must be taught in the format described in Section 7585.9(a) of the Business and Professions Code. The Baton Training Manual provides that format. Per BSIS regulation, upon successful completion of the course, the student leaves the classroom with the Baton Permit in hand.

Initial CCW Training Course: (8 hours)

This course meets and exceeds the requirements of California Penal Code sections 26165, instruction in firearms safety, and the law regarding the permissible use of a firearm.
